Dubbed Austria’s most romantic city, Vienna boasts a rich and fascinating history, magnificent architecture, and a multitude of cultural attractions to boot. Situated on the banks of the Danube river and in the heart of Europe, Vienna is the birthplace of the arts and cultural revolution of 100 years ago.
Hometown of the legendary composer Mozart and psychoanalyst Freud, every street exudes an unequivocal charm and atmosphere that’s unique to the city. As the glittering capital of Austria and a symbol of classical Europe, it’s easy to fall in love with Vienna.
Coffee House
Whether you come for a day or a week, a visit to a coffee house is mandatory. While there is plenty to see and marvel in this glorious city, it is foremost a city to be experienced. There are many atmospheric coffee houses dotted throughout the city, exuding traditional Viennese charm. Order up a strong coffee with cream and re-live a little bit of history with each sip. Vienna is the location of many explosive moments through time. It is said that Einstein, Freud and Marx spent time in coffee houses, giving birth to their revolutionary ideas and movements. Hitler may have plotted his mass destruction while sipping on coffee.
Sightseeing
Vienna is the kind of city you can get lost in while strolling around and never have a dull moment. The beautiful city is sprawling with palaces, historic architecture that rub shoulders with the new. If walking is not really your thing, you can hop on and hop off the Ring Tram to explore Ringstrasse. The scenic railway tour will bring you to all the notable sites in Viennese history, including Vienna State Opera and City Hall.
Another major tourist attraction and iconic landmark is the former summer home of the Habsburg family. Take a tour of the Schonbrunn Palace or explore its French garden, which comes to life during summer months.
Head over to the Museum Quarter to visit a range of art museums such as the Leopold Museum, MUMOK and the Museum of Fine Art. Whether you are in Vienna for the arts and culture or to have a romantic break, what will complete your trip will be a ride on the iconic ferris wheel originally built in 1897 and soak in the city from great heights. The Danube Tower’s observation deck and restaurant also provide views of Vienna, in a warmer setting.
Seeing as you’re in the city of Mozart, it would be a shame to visit his hometown and not attend a classical concert or opera. You will find many Mozart lookalikes milling around town trying to sell you a ticket to a show. Classical music lovers should however book in advance to snap up the best seat in the house.
Getting Around
Vienna is well serviced by a comprehensive transport system, complete with trains, trams, buses and an underground system. Taxis are surprisingly cheap for Western Europe, but unlike neighbouring countries, tipping your driver is expected in Vienna. If you have reserved your taxi over the telephone, then don’t be alarmed if extra charges are added to your fare. While public transport provides comfort and convenience, the best way to see Vienna is on foot. Nothing is ever too far away, so why not allow yourself to get lost in this city and see what treasures you uncover.
When to go
Vienna is the kind of city you can visit all year round. With each new season, a charm unique to the city is unlocked. During summer months, gardens come to life with full flower beds, outdoor festivals and parties come into full swing and people relax on the banks of the Danube river. Colder months can be spent warming up in a coffee house or exploring Christmas markets.
