Calabria Public Transport
Calabria, the southern most point of Italy, is a wonderful, unspoiled region of the beautiful country of Italy. Reggio Calabria is its capital and largest city. It is the best starting point to begin your journey through this fascinating region of ancient mountain landscapes, coast lines and culture.
The best way to travel in Calabria is by train. You can catch a Eurostar train to Reggio Calabria from Rome and Naples. Once in Reggio Calabria, there are a number of regional trains that can take you to smaller, local station throughout the whole region of Calabria. You can, for example, take a half hour train journey to the picturesque little fishing village of Scilla. From there, you can take a train north along the beautiful coastline to resorts such as Tropea. Don’t be afraid to get out at as many stops as you want, as all towns on this coast are lovely to see, walk around in, sit down at a terrace and have a lovely cappuccino, enjoying the wonderful view and relaxing atmosphere.
You will find Reggio Calabria’s main train station, Stazione Centrale, to the south of the city centre, on Piazza Garibaldi. The station holds a tourist information office where you can go for help, tickets and to determine the best routes and transfers for your Calabria train journey. From Stazione Centrale, you can also catch a bus to any destination within the city of Reggio Calabria, its lovely port, and the airport. You can get your bus tickets in a bar located at the bus stop opposite the train station.
Reggio Calabria also has another station in the north of the city, named Stazione Lido, which is the best way to get to the museum or Reggio Calabria port, called Stazione Marittima.
From Stazione Marittima, you can get ferries to Messina in Sicily, the Aeolian Islands, or Malta. When you want to buy tickets, take a note of the company name that runs the particular ferry service you would like to take, and step into that company’s office, located right at the port. You can also get more information there about times and returns etc.
Reggio Calabria’s airport, Aeroporto dello Stretto, mostly provides for flights within Italy itself. Destinations include Malta, Rome, Milan, Bologna and Venice. If you are looking for international flights you are best off using Lamezia Terme airport, or Catania or Palermo airports in Sicily.
