About St. Croix

St. Croix is the largest of the US Virgin Islands. English is the most common language spoken, but the people also speak Danish and Spanish. You will find a mixture of Afro-Caribbean people, Puerto Ricans, and Caucasians living in St. Croix enjoying the relaxing beach life. 

This island has a rich culture with very laid-back people, reggae music, Caribbean cuisines, and lots of dancing. It is about 45-minutes away from Puerto Rico, and you will see many people from St. Croix and Puerto Rico exchanging ideas, views and cultures. Temperatures are usually in the 80s year-round, making this an excellent sunny vacation hub. Winter in St. Croix is from March-May, and even though the city doesn’t have a rainy month, it does have regular rainfall that varies each month. 

The Danish influence seems elaborately detailed roof embellishments on the buildings, painted with pastel colours, with arched doors, and beautifully designed cream-coloured decorations known as ‘gingerbread architecture.' This is seen throughout the cities of Christiansted and Frederiksted. Whether cruising or flying into St. Croix, it’s good to take an excursion to explore Christiansted and Frederiksted towns.

An interesting thing about St. Croix is that the locals drive on the left side of the road. In 1917, the United States purchased the US Virgin Islands of St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas, so it is a part of the US, however, St. Croix locals are unable to vote in US primary elections. 

Explore Christiansted

Christiansted has neo-classical style architecture complementing the beauty of the island. The way to get to this town is by ferry. Visitors often come on cruise ships enjoying the scenic route of beautiful ocean and coastline. Upon arriving, a historic yellow building surrounded by hills of lush green will be seen, and there are plenty of stylish homes. This beautiful island has a colourful array of historical Danish-style architectural buildings, and it’s commonly known for its yellow coloured buildings. To grasp the history of Christiansted, it is recommended to visit Fort Christianvaern, the Old Danish Customs House, and the Government House. With a rich history of the West Indies, and Danish culture, there is much to explore.

Travel to Frederiksted

This Victorian-style town was established in 1751 and visitors can explore the waterfront, relax on the beach, and eat at one of the themed restaurants. When journeying through Frederiksted, you’ll see two black cannons in front of a red and white building called Fort Frederik. A museum and art gallery reveals the history of the island. Frederiksted also has a customs house. If you would like to sit and relax on the beach you can, rent umbrellas for shade. Visitors will also find vendors selling souvenirs, and after walking around at Frederiksted, you can take some time out at the small park near the Fort or eat Mahi bites at the restaurant.

Things to do

There are tropical white, sandy beaches. Visit Rainbow Beach, a popular beach with aqua blue water, sandy beaches, and palm trees. St. Croix has a historic culture illustrated at Fort Christianvaern in Christiansted and the Mount Pellier Domino Club in Frederiksted. Visitors can have some barbecued food in the towns or journey through Buck Island Reef National Monument, an island about 15-miles north of St. Croix. Island hopping is easy as three of the Virgin Islands are in proximity; so if you’re taking an extended vacation, check out St. Thomas and St. John as well.

A good way to get some historical background is by visiting the Whim (sugar) Plantation Museum; there is a restored windmill and the remains of the plantation buildings, including the historic slave quarters. 

The nightlife in St.Croix is centred around music and dancing with clubs bars and beach parties among the many ways locals and travellers like to unwind on the island 

Water activities

Water sports are a big thing on the island. The most popular activities include deep-sea fishing, kayaking, jet skiing, parasailing, and swimming. Visitors can also take a boat trip for an adventure around the coastline.

Other places to explore are the Tide Pools, Shoy Beach, and the St. George Village Botanical Garden.
