Philadelphia City Guide
Philadelphia is on the eastern coast of the US and is home to the Philadelphia Eagles football team, the 76s basketball team, and the Phillies baseball team. It is the largest city in Pennsylvania, a state bordering West Virginia, New Jersey, Ontario (Canada), New York, Delaware, Ohio and Maryland. Philadelphia was established in 1682, and is known as the city of brotherly love. It has classic-style architecture in much of the city with some high-rise buildings. The downtown is great for visitors to explore the city.
This is a truly historical US city and the first world heritage city in the country. The Declaration of Independence, now celebrated as an American holiday on July 4, was signed there commemorating life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; the Constitutional Convention was convened there in 1787 to discuss problems in governing the United States, and the famous scientist Benjamin Franklin lived in Philadelphia in the 18th century. Residents and visitors enjoy this city with fun parks, important history, and good food.
Things to see and do
Vacationers explore Philadelphia’s history, culture, and the cool parks. During the summer, visitors can check out the popular stroll along the Spruce Street Harbor Park and watch skating, people relaxing on one of many canopies in the park, food, and there are opportunities to play giant games such as chess, Connect Four, and Jenga. There is beautiful scenery along the Delaware River. The more adventurous visitors can go get spooked out by an amazing ghost story at the Eastern State Penitentiary!
One of Philadelphia’s most famous streets is South Street with businesses, restaurants, bars and clubs. It has classic-style buildings connected together. The architecture is similar to that seen in parts of New York.
Most visitors spend their time at sports games or on a tour, but don’t forget to visit one of Philadelphia’s museums at least once before leaving.
Visit a museum
Philadelphia has one of the best museums in the United States: the Franklin Institute. Children can explore science, art, and join in with activities and participate in one of the themed events. In addition, there is an amazing IMAX theater with movies suitable for all ages.
The Museum of Art has a wide selection of exhibits for a variety of arts, including theater, other visual performances and painting, so there’s a lot to see there. The Please Touch Museum is great for children with so many things that the kids can see and touch, making their learning more fun.
Done with those attractions? Try the Barnes Foundation, Independence National Historic Park and its monumental liberty bell, the Oval at Benjamin Franklin Parkway and the Schuylkill Banks Boardwalk.
Getting around
Philadelphia is a great city to visit if you don’t have a car because the local transport is so good. The best way to get around Philadelphia is by using public transportation or by taxi. Many Philadelphians get around on foot, or they cycle if their destination is close by, and the city has a grid street design that’s easy for travelers to understand.
The Downtown area is called Center City and has five main parks or squares that people may refer to when trying to get their bearings. They are Franklin, Washington, Rittenhouse, Logan, and Center.
If traveling further distances across town, it is recommended to take the RiverLink Ferry on the Camden Waterfront. The Septa Airport Line is a train that gets you around the city. Another transportation option is the Amtrak range of services at 30th Street Station.
Where to eat and what to eat
A popular food in Philadelphia is cheese. There are a variety of cheeses available, and there are two signature foods that are made with cheese. If traveling to this city and looking for a taste of what Philadelphia has to offer, try the Philly cheesesteak. Another food to try is a Hoagie. When in the city, visit the Reading Terminal Market, a popular indoor market with a variety of meats, breads, desserts, cheese, sauces, vegetables, Italian food, and other cuisines. This is a must-visit location if you are interested in cooking, eating and food production.
For dessert, try the Philadelphia cheesecake or a classic cannoli. If you like pop and ice cream, try one of Philadelphia’s root beer float ice creams, supposedly invented in Philadelphia.
